Geography @ Tickenham

Geography Intent Statement

At Tickenham, we consider geography to underpin a lifelong ‘conversation’ about Earth as the home of humankind. We believe that geography teaches children about the world in which they live and how it has changed over time. Through our curriculum, we strive to inspire our children to develop a curiosity and fascination about their world and the people in it.

The aim of geography is to equip children with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. The geography curriculum at Tickenham enables children to develop both knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. By nature, geography is an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. The children gain knowledge and skills through class-based learning and experience alongside hands-on fieldwork and trips. Our curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time at Tickenham Church of England Primary School and also to their further education and beyond.

Geography Implementation Statement

Geography is taught in blocks throughout the year so that children can achieve depth in their learning. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills of each blocked topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each cycle and across a child’s journey through the school.

Geography is taught through topic work with cross curricular links planned wherever possible so as to achieve a holistic approach and maximise curriculum coverage. We offer opportunities for children to go out and participate in ‘real life’ experiences, providing engagement through visits and studying localities first-hand.

Geography Impact Statement

To fulfil our vision of inspiring a generation, a Tickenham geographer is equipped with the geographical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the secondary curriculum and for life as an adult in the wider world. The children will be able to discuss their learning and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through a range of activities. Outcomes in photos, discussions, models, presentations, books and folders evidence a broad and balanced geography curriculum and demonstrate the children’s acquisition of identified key knowledge.  As children progress throughout the school, they develop knowledge, understanding and an appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context.
