Art and Design @ Tickenham
Art and Design Intent Statement
At Tickenham, children will develop skills to make artistic judgements about the quality and usefulness of their creation. They will learn to handle a wide range of tools and materials with increasing skills in order to express themselves as they develop abilities in art and craft. Art and Design is an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. It provides the children with the opportunities to express their individual interests, thought and ideas. High-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As children progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Art and Design Implementation Statement
Our art and design curriculum is varied and long-term plans ensure that we meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. Art and design is an integral part of the curriculum and will be taught in blocks in order to achieve depth. Where possible and appropriate, curriculum links will be made with other subjects. For example, children used the story of The Dot to inspire them to paint using pointillism. Children have also produced a Stone Age pot, necklace or other work of art out of clay.
Art and Design Impact Statement
To fulfil our vision of inspiring a generation, a Tickenham artist will be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design as well as knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the secondary curriculum and for life as an adult in the wider world. They will be able to apply their knowledge, understanding and skill and create their own work of art or design. Children will recognise the context of their work, then successfully evaluate and critique their own and that of others.
